The 2010 National Scout Jamboree promises to be the most exciting ever. Jamborees are held every 4 years – this one extended a year to coincide with the BSA’s one hundredth anniversay. The Jamboree will be the centerpiece and highlight of the 2010 centennial celebration.
A Jamboree is a city of more than 43,000 Boy Scout participants, adult leaders and adult and Venturer staff. The event is located on Fort A.P. Hill near Washington, DC . The event lasts 10 days and includes celebrations such as opening and closing arena shows, a merit badge midway detailing every merit badge in existence and action centers where scouts can enjoy: rappelling, Discover Scuba Diving, sailing, pioneering, kayaking, archery, buckskin games, confidence courses, conservation trail, fishing and much more.
A perennial jamboree tradition, patch trading is a favorite activity.
Scouts in a jamboree experience Scouting at its best. Jamboree are collections of the best things Scouting can offer. A unique jamboree spirit erupts and shines throughout the jamboree. Since 1981, Fort AP Hill has been the site of jamborees. Planning and infrastructure set up by volunteers has been perferfected to provide bus systems, telephone, internet, first aid, hospital care, police, fire, security, post offices, food delivery, newspaper, trading posts and all the support necessary to to service a city that pops up from the ground up.
Scouts always have something to see and do. A scout watches from camp as specialized parachutists drop by for a visit.
As a jamboree participant you will be placed in one of 3 contingent troops. There will be several troop meetings where you will form patrols, elect patrol leaders and a senior patrol leader, plan and build your jamboree gateway and perform a shakedown experience where you will set up your gear to make sure we have all our plans set up.
Scouts meet at Jamboree Hill, Camp Kickapoo 2 months before the Jamboree to check out gear and practice setting up camp in the allocated 108 foot by 72 foot standard jamboree space.
The 2010 TOUR will be similar to the following information posted regarding the 2005 TOUR. The contingent will fly from Oklahoma City to Philadelphia to tour for a day before travelling by bus to the Washington, DC, area. In DC, the contingent will visit Arlington, the Capitol, Air & Space Museum, Ford’s Theater, the International Spy Museum, other museums & monuments on the mall, etc. – time & weather permitting.
In 2005 Scouts enjoyed a terrific tour that included places like Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC. We flew up and spent several days before the jamboree begins touring the sites.
Scout Leaders work doubletime managing both their home units and a fully functioning jamboree troop. The leaders apply and are selected by the council based on their experience, diversity and training. The selection process is sensitive to make up a diverse leadership team of adults with diverse backgrounds that complement each others skills. The council encourages both newly trained and veteran leaders to make up Scouting’s dream team.
